2024 was a transitional year for us. In May, we relaunched our business with a new strategy and identity, renewing our commitment to delivering a positive impact for our partners.
Made for the World has one singular focus – to support the digital ambitions of for-impact organisations globally.
Why? Well, we see a problem with how our industry serves our clients. The digital needs of for-impact organisations are fundamentally different from those of commercial brands. Yet the web design systems and frameworks we encounter daily are almost entirely geared towards the latter.
We are passionate about solving this disconnect – creating online platforms that do more than simply sell the story of for-impact organisations, instead playing a crucial role in fostering the engagement and collaboration needed to further their mission (see ‘Can a for-impact website change the world?’).
Purpose and vision
In a year with record-breaking temperatures, continued biodiversity loss, and political and cultural unrest, the world is in an increasingly more fragile state.
For-impact organisations across the globe play a truly valuable part in addressing these issues, and our design process is tailored specifically to meet their online aspirations. The method results in high-performing digital platforms that sit at the heart of an organisation’s activities – not just communicating their value but tangibly delivering on their impact objectives in measurable ways.
This year we gained more clarity than ever in our commitment to this work, prompting us to renew our purpose and vision for the years ahead:
Our purpose:
Inspire positive action for people and planet
As designers, our craft is to turn often complex and challenging research, insight and strategy into articulate, engaging and impactful digital brand platforms that engage, influence and activate.
Our sole focus is on transformational change. We go beyond ethical screening, focusing on briefs that seek to shift mindsets and change behaviours in ways that completely reshape business strategy, processes and models.
The ultimate impact of our work is to decouple economic growth from resource use, and reconnect it to equity and inclusion and restore the environment to its former state, ensuring a fair and lasting future for all.
Our vision:
A world that is environmentally regenerative, socially resilient and institutionally reformed.
Environmental regeneration
Nature is not subject to systematically increasing societal extraction (fossil carbon, metals etc.), pollution (NOx, CFCs etc.) or degradation (deforestation, over-fishing etc.).
Societal resilience
All people have the opportunity and capacity to lead engaged, meaningful and fulfilling lives that protect the health of ecosystems and communities.
Institutional reform
All global structures, institutions and governance systems drive the pursuit of an inclusive planet-positive economy.
B Corporation
We must not underestimate the role of our business beyond our work – its environmental impacts, how it is governed, and how it supports communities.
113.9Overall B Impact score
80Qualifies for certification
50.9Median for ordinary businesses
Putting purpose before profit has always been fundamental to our mission, and we were delighted to make that official in 2023 when we became B Corp certified, joining a community of businesses leading a global movement for an inclusive, equitable, and regenerative economy.
Knowing that B Lab had a well-regarded reputation for setting high social and environmental performance standards for businesses, we engaged with their framework in our formative years, for inspiration on how best to set up our company.
Taking guidance from the B Impact Assessment (BIA) across all pillars of business – Governance, Workers, Community, Environment and Customers – we were prompted to create policies that go above and beyond what is statutory, establish an Advisory Board, formalise charitable giving, and more.
It was enough to earn us 113.9 points when we were certified in 2023 (80 points is the minimum requirement) – but by becoming a B Corp you commit to a journey of continuous improvement. Year-on-year, we look for ways to improve how we operate – ways we can create the least environmental harm, whilst positively impacting society, communities, and those we partner with.
This report looks at our progress over the past year, as we continue to challenge ourselves in how we can do better and be better as a business – and we will continue to do so in the years to come.
